Tanya Shpiniova, the NYPL’s manager of corporate relations and strategic partnerships, highlighted how constructive the event is for “all ages and financial levels.” And there’s no shortage of services available:
The Financial Fair allows people to meet directly with relevant government and non-profit agencies. Programs address banking and debt issues, tax planning, investing basics, and the not-so-basic outlook for what moves markets, social programs, and more. Library financial resources are introduced, and free financial, credit counseling, and Medicare sessions are available throughout the day.
According to Bank OZK’s EVP and Managing Director Martin Ball, “this is a great opportunity for us to educate New Yorkers about financial literacy which is incredibly important but sometimes overlooked.”
Setting aside time for financial planning, even if you can’t make it to New York City, can’t be overstated. “It all goes back to setting up a plan for yourself and following it,” Ball added. “Doesn’t matter if you save a dollar a day, a dollar a week, or a dollar a year…every day that you can make those smart decisions and choices to start saving for your future is a day closer to realizing those dreams of being financially secure.”
Minnie Mills added that Bank OZK helps customers plan financially by identifying “their ’pain point,’ or what keeps them up at night.” A “formal financial plan” is created based on individual customers’ goals and needs.
Mills also emphasized that even folks with few financial resources who think it’s “too late to plan” benefit from financial planning. It’s all about setting goals. “Starting and achieving one goal, such as paying off a credit card, gives an individual confidence and a feeling that they are more in control of their finances. This feeling of control can and will lead to other successes and reduce stress.”
The importance of financial planning can’t be overstated, which is why events like Financial Planning Day are so important. Everybody is welcome to attend, and if you can’t make it, look no further than your local library or OZK branch!
